Discovery! All About Dolphins @ Lauras

Wednesday, June 14, 2017 - 4:30pm to 5:30pm

The Discovery hands on program explores all sorts of different topics, including science, literature, technology, and more. Especially designed for elementary aged kids, come back each week and learn something new!

Recommended for ages 5 & up.

Bluebonnet author Polly Holyoke will talk briefly about how she went about creating and writing The Neptune Project and how much she learned about dolphins while researching the book. She will show colorful slides that help to explain these marine mammals' unique characteristics and behaviors. After discussing dolphins' habitat, their place on the food chain, and their role as a predator in the ocean, we will also talk about why dolphins are classified as mammals. At the end, we will play an echolocation game to help kids understand how dolphins use this amazing ability to find their prey.

A former middle school teacher, Polly Holyoke has been writing stories since she was in fifth grade. When she isn’t tapping away on her computer, Polly loves reading, camping, skiing, scuba diving and hiking in the desert. Her first children’s book, The Neptune Project, has been named to three state reading lists including the Texas Bluebonnet Reading List. She lives with three rescue dogs, two spoiled cats, and a nice husband who tolerates piles of books all over their house.
