The Immigration Series Art Exhibit @ Laura's
The Immigration Series is a cohesive series of paintings intended to objectively narrate the history of immigration and its current issues. It was intended to challenge students artistically, emotionally and socially. By choosing a current issue that has two distinct viewpoints, the hope was that students would be able to have intelligent conversations, understand the background that lead to the current situation, form their opinion on the topic, and while they may not agree, respect the opinions of others.
Julie Cimino officially signed on as a 3rd grade teacher in 2010, where she taught all subjects. In her 3rd year, Julie was selected to conceive, design, and implement one of two flexible learning environment classrooms and has served as a subject matter expert on the unique pilot program that has spread throughout the Eanes Independent School District. Today, she is the art teacher at Valley View Elementary. Her approach to creating a learning environment and designing lessons starts with asking, "what would motivate their learning and how will they value it?" The result is rich, hands-on, collaborative learning that motivates and delights her students. As a teacher in the Austin area, she is always looking for new and exciting ways to involve students in current issues and incorporate them into the arts.
