Eanes History Group: In Conversation with Journalist Neal Spelce
Eanes History Group welcomes award-winning journalist Neal Spelce to discuss his new memoir, his illustrious decades-long career, and his involvement in the West Lake Hills community.
Mr. Spelce will be discussing, selling, and signing copies of his best-selling memoir, With the Bark Off, A Journalist’s Memories of LBJ and a Life in the News Media, now in its second printing.
During Mr. Spelce’s six-decade career, he has interviewed, consulted, or interacted with nine different US presidents, served as a Senior Advisor to US Sen. John McCain, and acted as communications consultant to both Texas Gov. Ann Richards and New York Gov. Mario Cuomo.
In addition to receiving top awards for radio and television news reporting, Mr. Spelce was cited for his bravery, and for saving countless lives, while reporting under fire and in real-time the 1966 mass school shooting from atop the Tower on the University of Texas campus in Austin.
He and his family have been fixtures in the Westbank since moving to West Lake Hills almost 50 years ago. The holder of three communications degrees from UT, he was named an Outstanding Alumnus of UT’s College of Communication and was honored when the College permanently named The Neal Spelce Broadcast Journalism Studio in his honor.
